Every Life Has Value: Hope Is Growing

Recent events provide encouraging evidence that our nation continues to move toward greater respect for the dignity of every human life.

Americans Continue to Favor Meaningful Limits on Abortion

Gallup's May 2026 national survey demonstrates that the abortion debate is far from settled. While 53% of Americans identify as "pro-choice" and 42% as "pro-life," the more meaningful question is what Americans believe the law should actually permit. On that question, the country is nearly evenly divided.

Gallup found that 49% of Americans believe abortion should either be illegal in all circumstances (17%) or legal only in a few circumstances (32%), while 48% believe abortion should be legal in all (33%) or most (15%) circumstances.

These findings are significant. Contrary to the narrative often portrayed in the media, a majority of Americans do not support unrestricted abortion throughout pregnancy. Instead, most Americans favor substantial legal protections for unborn children.

The Dobbs decision returned the issue to the people and their elected representatives. Four years later, Gallup reports that public opinion has stabilized around greater acceptance of meaningful abortion restrictions than existed during much of the Roe v. Wade era.

North Carolina Faces an Ongoing Challenge

While national attitudes show encouraging signs, North Carolina remains one of the Southeast's primary abortion destinations.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' 2023 Abortion Report ( the latest official statistics we have):

• 42,954 abortions were performed in North Carolina.• Nearly 37% (15,808) involved women traveling from other states.• Approximately 70% of abortions were chemical abortions using abortion drugs.• Although abortions among North Carolina residents declined minimaly, the increase in women traveling from states with stronger protections resulted in an overall increase in abortions performed in our state.

These numbers remind us that much work remains. North Carolina has become a destination for abortion, making our educational, legislative, and outreach efforts more important than ever.

Yet these statistics also strengthen our resolve. Every life saved, every mother helped, and every heart changed matters.

Medicine Continues to Reveal the Humanity of the Unborn

Recently, LifeNews highlighted the story of a baby diagnosed with gastroschisis, a condition in which the intestines develop outside the baby's abdomen. Surgeons performed a groundbreaking fetal procedure at 26 weeks of pregnancy, repairing the defect while the child was still in the womb. The baby was later delivered and continues to recover. The story demonstrates what modern medicine increasingly recognizes: the unborn child is a patient deserving skilled medical care and every opportunity to live.

Only a generation ago, many of these children would have had little hope. Today, physicians are performing life-saving procedures before birth, treating their smallest patients with extraordinary compassion and expertise.

Every advance in fetal surgery reinforces a simple truth. The child in the womb is not merely a "pregnancy." He or she is a unique human being, capable of receiving medical treatment, responding to pain relief, healing after surgery, and being welcomed into the world.

The Future Is Bright

The pro-life movement has always been built on hope.

Hope that hearts can change.

Hope that science will continue to reveal the wonder of human development.

Hope that mothers facing difficult pregnancies will receive the support they deserve.

Hope that our laws will increasingly reflect the equal dignity of every member of the human family.

Every child, regardless of age, size, disability, diagnosis, or circumstance of conception, possesses inherent worth. Every human life deserves protection, compassion, and love.

At North Carolina Right to Life, we remain committed to educating our communities, advocating for life-affirming laws, supporting women and families, and building a culture where every child is welcomed and every life is recognized as a priceless gift.

Together, we can continue moving North Carolina and our nation toward a future where the dignity of every human life is honored from conception to natural death.
